New Laws Taking Effect This Week

The prohibition on assault weapons is one of the most discussed, and it is currently being challenged in court.
With a few exceptions, it is illegal to import, sell, manufacture, buy, or transfer assault weapons.Virginia State Police are temporarily prohibited from implementing the legislation by an injunction obtained by a Lancaster County judge.However, Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones claims that the injunction only covers state police and does not apply to particular areas.
That belief has been branded dangerous by parties opposed to the assault weapons prohibition.
Furthermore, carrying specific assault weapons in public is prohibited by another rule that goes into force on July 1.
