Black Man Detained By Security Guards For Taking A Picture Of A Bike Rack

A man in Oakland, California was detained at an apartment complex by security guards who thought he was casing cars. Three security guards detained Kenya Wheeler until police arrived. According to Wheeler, he had his smartphone and an umbrella in his hands. The security guards stopped the head of the Oakland Bicyclist and Pedestrian Commission as he was walking home from yoga class. Wheeler uploaded a video of the confrontation to social media, explaining that he stopped to take pictures of the bike racks that were decorated with colorful yarn to show his colleagues. Police arrived and eventually allowed Wheeler to leave. The firm that employed the security guards has changed security providers.
