TEXAS MAN EXECUTED ALTHOUGH FALSE TESTIMONY WAS INTRODUCED

Written by on December 12, 2019

Travis Runnels was executed by lethal dosage on Wednesday, Dec 11 at 7:04pm. State’s attorneys introduced A.P. Merillat, a criminal investigator, who introduced false testimony in Runnels’ 2005 capital murder trial in Amarillo.  Although prosecutors introduced false information in his 2005 capital murder trial of Stanley Wiley, a prison employee, Runnels’ lawyers hoped the state’s reliance on Merillat’s testimony would prompt the U.S. Supreme Court to stop his execution due to the fact that Merillat’s incorrect testimony has since led to two overturned death sentences in Texas.
